Welcome to members snippets, a page for news about Talisman theatre people
and our goings on.
We’re sad to announce the passing of Graham Sawyer on March 31st. Graham had been a member of the Talisman Theatre since joining in 1976 and directed his first production – Albert – in 1977.
As manager and licensee of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 1974 until his retirement in 2000, Graham was often seen in the foyer welcoming theatregoers from all parts of the world. His love of the theatre was infectious, and when not in Stratford he could be found at the Talisman, directing, designing and generally helping wherever he could.
Last year Graham made a generous donation to the Talisman extension fund; and even in his last weeks, when he was very ill, he would send us numerous letters and notes with suggestions for plays, musicals and ideas for the continuing success of the Talisman Theatre.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him as a vibrant and dedicated member of the theatre.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Phil Highley on Friday 27th December.
Phil was an active and much respected member of the Talisman since the beginning of the seventies. He appeared on stage in pantomimes and Theatre’s famous Palace of Varieties. He also wrote and directed various productions in years gone by.
More recently, he was the Theatre’s treasurer until 2017 and a Theatre Trustee at the time of his passing.
He will be greatly missed by all his Talisman friends.
Planning Permission Granted
Planning permission’s been granted for our development plans. You may have seen the plans displayed in the Theatre Foyer. The work includes extension of the ground floor and a larger first floor extension. These changes will enable us to provide patrons with a more spacious foyer and bar area and will improve our accessibility.
We’ve also had agreement to extend the backstage and scene dock area which will give us a bigger costume store and scenery storage space.
A small team has been formed who’ll now focus on raising funds so that we can start work. Look out for more information over the next few months and if you think you can help with contacts, etc., please contact Nigel Elliott
NODA Award Win
On Sunday 14th April the annual NODA awards for the West Midlands regions were announced. We’re really proud to have won the ‘Best Drama Award’ for our production of Journey’s End last October.
Congratulations to director Steve Smith and all the cast and crew.
Talisman Friday Night Social
Friday nights are really popular in the Theatre so the valuable support of volunteers to open and run the bar is much appreciated. Please sign up to ‘man/woman’ the bar on the planner pinned up next to the bar. If you fancy ‘having a go’ on the bar pop down on a Friday evening and speak to Des McCann.
