SUMMARY:CINEMA - Oppenheimer
DESCRIPTION:OPPENHEIMER\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 17th Feb 2024 7.30pm\n\n\n\n\n“NOW I AM BECOME DEATH\, THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS”\n\n\n\n\n\nCert: 15 \n2023  181 mins (plus an intermission of 15 mins)   2.35:1 \nDirector: Christopher Nolan \nStarring:  Cillian Murphy\, Emily Blunt\, Robert Downey Jr\, Matt Damon\, Kenneth Branagh and Florence Pugh \nDuring World War II\, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. \nOppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16\, 1945\, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion\, forever changing the course of history. \nWith an all star cast and now winner of five 2024 Golden Globe Awards including Best Director and Best Screenplay\, Oppenheimer is very different from Nolan’s recent films\, especially the Sci-Fi ones\, but shows that Nolan can master the biopic/drama genre just as well as he can any other. \nThe film is three hours long but goes through remarkably quickly and enjoyably. Nolan cleverly shows what happened to Oppenheimer after the war as well and as one half of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon one can easily see how people who had just watched the Barbie movie would also enjoy Oppenheimer. \nThe film will be shown with an intermission with the bar and ice creams available.

SUMMARY:CINEMA - Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris
DESCRIPTION:Cert: PG \n2022  116 mins  2.39:1 \nDirector: Anthony Fabian \nStarring: Lesley Manville & Jason Isaacs \n“Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris” tells the story of a widowed cleaning lady in 1950s London who falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress and decides that she must have one of her own. It’s as pleasant as you want a movie like this to be\, yet it does so without simplification that patronizes the audience. ”  Guardian \n“Anthony Fabian wagers the tone of the Paddington movies\, with a Wes Anderson aesthetic and Mike Leigh’s vindicating spirit. ”  Times UK / IMDb

SUMMARY:CINEMA - Operation Mincemeat
DESCRIPTION:Talisman Cinema Presents… \n“Deception. The Greatest Weapon in War.” \nCert: 12A \n2022  128 mins  2.39:1 \nDirector: John Madden \nStarring: Colin Firth\, Matthew Macfadyen\, Kelly Macdonald\, Penelope Wilton & Jason Isaacs \nIt’s 1943. The Allies are determined to break Hitler’s grip on occupied Europe\, and plan an all-out assault on Sicily; but they face an impossible challenge – how to protect a massive invasion force from potential massacre. It falls to two remarkable intelligence officers\, Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen) to dream the most inspired and improbable disinformation strategy of the war – centered on the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man. From the producers of ‘The King’s Speech’\, Operation Mincemeat is the extraordinary and true story of an idea that altered the course of the war – defying logic\, risking countless thousands of lives\, and testing the nerves of its creators to breaking point. \n“Adapted from Ben Macintyre’s book\, the screenplay is a brisk and jolly affair and Michelle Ashford’s script fuses multiple strands and moods: tense\, romantic\, thrilling\, unexpectedly funny\, and endlessly surprising. It tells a richly human story of the soldiers we seldom see\, who fight a different kind of war in shadows and deception\, haunted by the knowledge that certainty and guarantee of success are nowhere to be found.”  Times UK / IMDb \n“Operation Mincemeat is an incredibly thrilling watch if not for the simple fact that this audacious event actually occurred during the second world war. Even if you know the story it will keep you on the edge of your seats.”  Chicago Sun-Times \nFor  more info or to book tickets\, see the the Cinema page.
