Every character who steps onto the Talisman stage has a story to tell — and what they wear is part of that story. From finding the perfect coat to putting together an entire cast’s costumes, our Wardrobe Team plays a vital role in bringing each production to life.
We’re looking for more volunteers to join the team, and we’re launching Wardrobe Wednesdays to help you discover how you can get involved.
Starting Wednesday 21 October 2026, we’ll meet every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm onwards in the Talisman Theatre foyer.
Come along for hot drinks, biscuits and a relaxed chat about upcoming productions, their costume needs and the people who will help make them happen.
You don’t need to be able to sew!
There’s much more to wardrobe than making costumes. The Talisman has an extensive collection of clothing and accessories, and a large part of the work involves choosing pieces, creating complete outfits and helping directors and actors develop the right look for each character.
You might enjoy searching our existing stock, sourcing something a production needs, keeping costumes organised or helping backstage during performances. If you can sew or carry out alterations, we’d love to put those skills to use too — but they’re certainly not essential.
An interest in clothes and characters, an eye for detail, good organisational skills or simply a willingness to get stuck in can all make a valuable contribution.
What could you help with?
Depending on your interests and availability, wardrobe volunteering could include:
- Selecting costumes and accessories from our existing collection.
- Working with directors and actors to put together characters’ outfits.
- Sourcing, buying or hiring additional items where needed.
- Preparing and organising costumes for rehearsals and performances.
- Carrying out or arranging alterations and repairs.
- Supporting actors with dressing and quick changes backstage.
- Returning costumes to stock and keeping our wardrobe and dressing rooms organised.
Our Wednesday gatherings will give us a chance to look ahead together: discussing each show’s requirements, who will lead its wardrobe team and what support is needed.
New to theatre? You’ll have support
You won’t be expected to know everything from day one. Experienced volunteers will show you around, explain how our wardrobe works and guide you through the practicalities of supporting a production.
For your first shows, you’ll work alongside existing team members, giving you the chance to learn, ask questions and build your confidence before taking on more responsibility.
Whether you’re an experienced costume enthusiast or have never ventured backstage, we’d love to welcome you.
