SHEILA'S ISLAND
Laughter at every missed turn!
by Tim Firth
Directed by Jill Laurie
A foggy bonfire night and four female executives are Team C in Pennine Mineral Water Ltd’s annual outward-bound team-building weekend.
Sheila has been nominated team leader and, using her cryptic crossword-solving skills, has unwittingly stranded her team on an island in the Lake District.
Wet, cold and hungry, the girls seek to survive by making weapons out of a bra and a spatula, and making a rescue flag with a plastic plate and a toasting fork.
The stresses bring out the best and the worst in them all; truths are told and dirty linen aired. What is Julie’s husband really doing in Aldi? How do you catch fish with a mobile phone that’s run out of battery? And why are they on this team-building course when they could be at a spa?
This amateur production of “Sheila’s Island” is presented by arrangement with Concord

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
More than 30 years ago, Tim Firth wrote a play called Neville’s Island, a story about four unfit, middle-aged businessmen on a team-building exercise in the Lake District getting shipwrecked on an island on Derwentwater. At the time he was in his twenties and says that, in those days, he probably couldn’t have imagined that women could behave as badly as the men in Neville’s Island. But when, a few years ago, someone suggested he wrote a version of the play for women, he realised that was a ridiculous and patronising idea. Consequently Sheila’s Island was born, and the result is a play that was originally billed as ‘The Office meets Lord of the Flies meets Miranda’! I do hope that you enjoy this journey as four fabulously talented women take to the Talisman stage.
